Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU) is a not-for-profit National Research and Education Network (NREN) that offers affordable services uniquely designed to enable collaboration among its member institutions and their global partners.

The network is a cooperatively owned and community-driven service provider that helps to facilitate research and education networking among its member institutions through interconnecting them with other research and education networks as well as to the commercial Internet worldwide, thereby overcoming the traditionally high costs of information and knowledge sharing and exchange.

Research and Education Network for Uganda | RENU, which tells the story of the harnessing of ICT-enabled collaboration among Ugandan researchers and the higher education community by linking them to their peers and colleagues nationally within Uganda, regionally within Africa and Internationally to the global research and education (R&E) communities.

Vision: A national research and education environment in which Uganda’s researchers and scholars effectively contribute to knowledge creation, dissemination and application in solving society’s problems through local and international collaboration.

Mission: To facilitate collaboration among Uganda’s research and education institutions for knowledge creation, sharing and utilization, through the provision of advanced networking and other advanced technical services.

Objectives

  1. Ensure that member R&E institutions fully benefit from the Africa Connect project (www.africaconnect.eu) and access much more affordable regional and International R&E connectivity.
  2. Connect all universities, colleges and research institutions to an affordable country-wide high speed network-backbone for cheaper & faster national, regional & international collaboration.
  3. Facilitate affordable access to ICT-enabled global information, knowledge & research resources for R&E institutions.
  4. Build local and international partnerships for enhancing and more effective harnessing of research and education networking for research-led transformation of higher education and for national development.
  5. Support human and equipment capacity enhancement for member institutions in the areas of network engineering, e-learning, content development and content sharing.
  6. Serve as a test center and coordination center for developing, deploying & evaluating emerging R&E-enabling technologies.

Milestones

  1. University Vice Chancellors & CEOs of Research Institutions form an NREN for Uganda: Jan 2006
  2. Incorporation of RENU as a not-for-profit members’-owned organisation: Jan. 2008
  3. Recognition as Uganda’s NREN by MoES and MoICT: Nov. 2009
  4. Received Private Network Operator’s License from UCC: July 2010
  5. Fulfilled conditions for participation in AfricaConnect project: September 2013
  6. Establishment of UbuntuNet Alliance PoP in Kampala to link RENU to other African NRENs and to UA PoPs in London and Amsterdam: Jan. 2014
  7. Acquired Advanced Network Equipment for implementing RENUNet: Dec. 2013 to Feb. 2014.
  8. The first RENU Member Institution starts testing Link through RENUNet: 25th Feb 2014.
